1930's/40's - First colour TV. Lots of musicals, Judy garland, songs within films, big dance routines and colour which made it vibrant.
1955 - James Dean killed in car crash. Era of the teenager, first time young people have their own money to spend and do what they like.
1964 - Top of the pops first started
1967 - First music television programs. When bands couldn't appear on stage they would send a film of themselves doing the song, e.g. Strawberry Fields by the Beatles
1975 - Queen create Bohemian Rhapsody, the first official music video. Too complex to perform live and they wanted to recreate their album cover. It cost £3,500 to make.
1979 - Mike Nesbit created a series of pop clips to persuade companies that a music channel would work.
1981 - The launch of MTV. Only 200 videos were shown at first because not many were around at the time. First video to be shown on it was Video Killed the Radio Star by the Buggles
1985 - MTV takes the arty route with Andy Warhol's 15 minutes. Needed to prove that videos sold music. The 80's also included Michael Jackson's video Thriller, which has been voted by many the best music video of all time.
