History of the Music Video

1923 - The Talkies. The first time music and film were seen together. The Jazz Singer was the first sound film.
1930's/40's - First colour TV. Lots of musicals, Judy garland, songs within films, big dance routines and colour which made it vibrant.
1955 - James Dean killed in car crash. Era of the teenager, first time young people have their own money to spend and do what they like.
1964 - Top of the pops first started
1967 - First music television programs. When bands couldn't appear on stage they would send a film of themselves doing the song, e.g. Strawberry Fields by the Beatles
1975 - Queen create Bohemian Rhapsody, the first official music video. Too complex to perform live and they wanted to recreate their album cover. It cost £3,500 to make.
1979 - Mike Nesbit created a series of pop clips to persuade companies that a music channel would work.
1981 - The launch of MTV. Only 200 videos were shown at first because not many were around at the time. First video to be shown on it was Video Killed the Radio Star by the Buggles
1985 - MTV takes the arty route with Andy Warhol's 15 minutes. Needed to prove that videos sold music. The 80's also included Michael Jackson's video Thriller, which has been voted by many the best music video of all time.

Big up MJ. Peace out.

EMAIL!!

We have sent an email to a band that lives local to where we are, MK Zero. We are waiting for a reply but we believe that they will let us use the song because one of our group members knows the band quite well.
Will update when we have had an email back from them.
Ciao for now.

Textual Analysis

Textual analysis of two music videos been done by prodigy

The first video I analysed was warrior dance and the genre of music is is drum and base/ rock

The video has music that is fast paced and reflects on the movement of the cigarette packets for example in a fast paced bit of the song there was a lot of action (dancing and when the music pace and beat slowed down you focus was drawn onto the match and everything started to move slower. When the phrase “do it” is said a match is then thrown on to the alcohol. Also a stomp on the 23rd second matches the beat of the music.

There are no instruments shown in the video because it is mostly done on computers and the style of the music doesn’t really suite it.

The band is already quite established so this gives them a chance to be more creative with there music videos. There are faces aren’t shown on this video. The band ahs got a unique style of music and this also the same for there videos. There is use of fire this may be used to rifer to one of their most successful songs fire starter.

The video show various things such as burning the of the bar this could suggest they are saying to alcohol and also the cigarette packets have things like tarmac and also hospital this also shows maybe what they feel about smoking. This represent a change of image maybe saying they want to stop drinking and smoking. There are different points of view being used like out side the pub in front of the door the vision is blurred and the music is muffled but when the camera enters the bar the music is load and it become clearer. Also at the beginning of the clip the cigarette packets being swept onto the street bye the pub owner and then its like the cigarette packets are taking revenge by trashing the pub.

This video is different and also has a unique feel to it. This is not what prodigy normally does but has worked well for them on this occasion. There is also a symbol used in the clip a ant not sure what for a symbol the band represents maybe.

The second video I analysed is called omen this music is the same genre of warrior dance a little more rock based. Because music instruments are used you see in the video people playing the drums and also a guitar or base. There is in the video a girl playing a xylophone following the beat of the song and then it gets quick paced the girl is suggested as a omen witch is a   phenomenon that is believed to fore tell the  HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Future" \o "Future" future. And the phrase “now” is emprisised by the close up on the face with the shock shown on it. When the soung picks up to a faster beat it braeks into a dance scene where are live and thre are flashing lights and things that make it feel real fast. There is more sing in this song but repeats the same line but changing the beat making it fastrer and slower using the bell from the girl to slow it down.this is shown in the third miniute of the song. The company shows the every one goind mad and dancing and really having a good time this gives the buyer a insentive to buy the cd. This video in my opinion is better then warrior dance because it is what prodagy is all about and there is really good parts that make the music sound more exsiloarating and fast. The singers are constintally moving. The video relates to fire starter because it has a fast beat with them constantly moving and jumping.the video capture there image very good because they are known to be powerful and distinkt in there type of movement on there videos there crazy apperance and also there weird but good videos. The camera movement is always moving changing scene very qiuck with a birds eye view in some while the camera is spinning this the classic style of camera they use. This is to match the beat of the song also the girl is always represented in black and white drawing focus on to her a zoom is also used to suggest this. There is also a part of the clip where a man trys to take something of the girl and she then goes crazy and he goes on  the floor and screams but the music does it instead. The girl is wearing a uniform old style this may suggest she is a ghost this is also backed up wit her scary apperance and no one taking notice of her except that man. A symle also appears on the on the neck of the girl and also the same symbol is on the xylophone. Suggesting a link.
